Stress is comprised of physical processes that the body goes through when faced with certain situations. These physical processes happen automatically and are difficult to control. Top that with the accompanying mental processes and the result is stress.People experience varying degress of this unpleasant mental state, and those who have a predilection towards anxiety or mental illness may be more prone to the feeling.
The amount of stress someone will feel when faced with a situation is based on how the individual interprets what is causing it. Some people will feel threatened or afraid because they think they have no control over what is happening around them. The consequence of this feeling of lack of control is stress. Then there are those who are completely prepared to handle the situation, and rarely feel stress unless in extreme situations.

The human body has a built-in physical response to various adverse conditions. These conditions are faced with pressure, challenge or danger and the body needs to react quickly. For this, the body release hormones like cortisol and adrenaline to help doing this. These hormones play major role for the “fight or flight” response and then involve the metabolic rate, heart-rate and the blood pressure. This all result in a heightened – or stressed – state, which prepares the body for optimum performance to deal with a stressful or depressed situation.
Very frequently, modern stresses do not call for fight or flight. However, the same stressing hormones are released as a response to the reaction and this natural procedure against the challenge or danger, instead of helping, can alter health and reduce the ability to stabilize mentally and physically.

For a working mom, their “work” day never really ends. They may go to work from 9-5 and come home, but they come home to more work. They have a family to feed and take care of and a house to keep in order. They never really have a chance to leave their work stress at the door when they come home to their family.
Since they’re constantly on the go, they find it hard to balance their work life with their family life. When the line between work and home can’t be seen, stress from one has free reign to the other. They start to realize that they don’t know if they’re coming or going anymore.

It does amaze me sometimes when i meet clients in my practice who have never really known what it is like to deeply relax. I specialize in anxiety counseling and can only recall one person who came to me who performed a relaxation exercise daily. It is vitally important that anxiety sufferers establish a relaxation routine because the core of anxiety and panic disorder, as well as many other emotional issues, is an over-arousal of the nervous system. I am aware that to a certain extent i am stating the obvious, however, in practice most clients don’t take time out to lower this arousal on a regular basis which would tremendously enhance their quality of life if done consistently.
